The numeric patterns detailed on this site cannot save you from your sins. They simply point us to the God who can: the Author of the Bible. He is the true and living God who created all things, and is above all, longsuffering in mercy, eternal, invisible, immortal, and holy in all His being. He created you and He loves you. That was proven ~2000 years ago when the Word became flesh so that He would be crucified at the cross of Calvary, as a sacrifice for all, when he took all our sins and bare them in his own body, cursed, and hanging on the tree in our place. Many people think their good deeds will be good enough to outweigh their bad on the day of judgment. What a terrifying day that will be, as they enter the presence of the Most Holy, having trusted their own goodness and the work of their own hands instead of those blood-drenched hands that were nailed upon the cross. We have all sinned. We are all guilty. We have all come short. The good news is that Jesus, the Son of God, tasted death in our place. Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: 1 Cor 15:3-4 How do you escape damnation? So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and from David until the carrying away into Babylon are fourteen generations; and from the carrying away into Babylon unto Christ are fourteen generations.
Matthew 1:17
The word “four” (which appears in the word “fourteen”) (Matthew 1:17), appears 77x in the New Testament. This is significant due to the fact that this is the first number written in the New Testament, along with the fact that the word fourteen* itself appears 7x in the N.T.
In the New Testament
four = 54x
fourth = 9x
foursquare = 1x
fourfold = 1x
fourfooted = 3x
fourteen = 5x
fourteenth = 2x
fourscore = 2x
Total (54 + 9 + 1 + 1 + 3 + 5 + 2 + 2) = 77 mentions of four* the first number written in the N.T.
At the outset of the New Testament, Matthew immediately draws our attention to a remarkable numeric pattern woven into the generations of Jesus Christ. He specifically highlights three sets of fourteen generations: (1) from Abraham to David, (2) from David to the Babylonian captivity, and (3) from the Babylonian captivity to Christ.
Despite some claims that numbers hold no special significance in scripture, the Holy Ghost chose to begin the entire New Testament by emphasizing the number fourteen in the generations of Jesus. Upon closer inspection, Matthew’s deliberate numeric emphasis becomes even clearer, since there are not exactly fourteen generations listed from the Babylonian captivity to Christ. This draws out an interesting truth: God (via Matthew) prioritized the number fourteen over merely recording every individual name.
Why not 14 for the last group? Matthew only records 41 generations. And it’s clear that Matthew deliberately omitted certain individuals (Ahaziah, Joash, Amaziah, Jehoiakim) which demands further study in itself. Nevertheless, we must submit to the simple fact that God holds the numeric pattern of 14 generations higher than actual historical record-keeping. God uses numbers all the time in the Bible, from the beginning, with his 7 days of creation, to the end with his holy city, New Jerusalem, measured by twelves in about twelve different ways. And here in Matthew 1, in the very generations of his Son Jesus Christ, we once again see God counting and working through patterns.
Thus, whether at the beginning and end of the entire Bible (Genesis 1-2, Revelation 21,22), or the New Testament itself (Matthew 1, Revelation 21-22), we encounter the unsearchable wisdom of God revealed through numbers.
